OCI, THE COMPANY THAT WILL BECOME THE MECHNOLOGY GROUP, WAS ESTABLISHED 50 YEARS AGO

Valsamoggia (BO), November 2023 – The Varvel Group is celebrating an important milestone this year with the 50th anniversary of OCI, now known as Mechnology. It is a particularly exciting event because Varvel has accompanied the growth of OCI almost from the start.

It all began in 1973 when Ferruccio Bertinelli founded OCI S.r.l. with a partner. The first location was a small workshop in Calderara di Reno. The business moved to Zola Predosa

and the Berselli family joined OCI back in 1979. In 1986, one of the founding partners left and the Berselli family became a majority shareholder.

The company facilities expanded greatly in the 1980s, from 500 to 1,000 square meters, moving to Lavino di Mezzo and then to Anzola dell’Emilia. In those days, OCI was mainly involved in gear hobbing, while in the 1990s it started offering full supplies, managing and controlling all other processes in-house, including raw material procurement. This allowed the company to acquire important customers in several key industries, such as gate automation, power transmission and woodworking machine automation.

The first turning point was in 1995 with the purchase of the first CNC machine. This investment was taken on together with Varvel to improve production. Personnel grew at the same time. In 1996, a team of 12 to 15 people began working on double shifts and this timetable is still in force today. A second machine for making worm output shaft gears was purchased.

Another key year was 2001, when the company moved to Crespellano, now Valsamoggia, and the first robotized system was installed.

Mechnology was created in 2009 at the behest of the Varvel Group S.p.A. to coordinate the activities of OCI, Benincasa Meccanica and IMAS. In 2018, OCI changed its name to Mechnology, continuing to work closely with Varvel and for direct customers as well.

Other CNC machines have been bought over the years, bringing the total to 13 machines, of which eight are robotized. Personnel was upped to 40 people. Some 1.5 million pieces are made per year in the 2,500-square-meter plant. Some production steps that were previously outsourced are now carried out in-house to speed up inspection and delivery times. One of the most recent investments was the acquisition of a laser-marking robotic hobbing system in 2022.

Since 2018, the company has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Varvel Group.

The history of OCI/Mechnology is one of the spirit of enterprise, pride in its roots and the drive to lead innovation. These are the qualities that propelled a workshop established in what was little more than a garage to become the industry it is today, capable of serving multinational groups operating in power transmission, gate automation, automatic woodworking machines and boat transmissions (which require special treatments to cope with the marine environment).

Today, Mechnology is a company that looks to the future with optimism. The offices have been expanded to offer increasingly timely customer service and are evaluating new hobbing technologies to take performance to the next level.

The approach to quality and sustainability is evidenced by the achievement of ISO 9001 certification (since 2010) and investments in new vacuum systems and inverter compressors, which can cut consumption by 30%.

1973-2023: 50 years of commitment, innovation, and responsibility. The Varvel Group is proud to be part of this long history and is looking forward to writing its next chapters.
