How Varvel’s Made in Italy design improves global industrial performance

In the power transmission sector, the term “Made in Italy” refers not only to a product’s geographical origin, but also — and above all — to the way it is designed and manufactured. More specifically, it represents a high-level industrial approach based on technical expertise, process control, manufacturing quality and the ability to adapt solutions to application requirements.

Since 1955, Varvel has designed and manufactured gearboxes, gearmotors and speed variators in Italy for fixed applications requiring small and medium power ratings. Over more than seventy years of activity, the company has developed a business model that combines strong manufacturing roots, innovation and international presence, becoming a globally recognized partner in the power transmission industry.

With 45,000 square meters of covered production area in Italy, more than 300,000 products manufactured every year, about 200 employees worldwide, two subsidiaries in the USA and India and a global network of more than 100 business partners across over 60 countries, Varvel brings Made in Italy design to a wide range of markets and industrial applications.

How Varvel combines tradition and innovation

Varvel’s history showcases a technical heritage that continues to evolve. The experience gained in designing gearboxes, gearmotors and speed variators forms the basis of an approach focused on continuous improvement, also reflected in the payoff “Know-how to do it”: the ability to identify the most suitable response to customer requirements through advanced standard products and customized solutions.

Since 2021, Varvel has also been recognized as a Historic Brand of National Interest, a prestigious title reserved for companies traditionally connected to Italian territory that have registered their trademark for at least fifty years. For the company, this recognition is more than a celebratory achievement: it confirms an industrial continuity built over time and supported by manufacturing expertise that remains firmly rooted in Italy.

The constant drive toward innovation has naturally played a decisive role in this journey. Thanks to the work of its Research & Development department, Varvel introduced solutions that significantly innovated the gearbox market — such as the separate motor flange without sealing ring nd the coupling for the connection between motor and gearbox. These design choices simplified assembly, improved motor-gearbox integration and increased product application flexibility.

The same logic is reflected in Varvel’s well-known modular approach, which allows multiple solutions to be configured using common components. For machine builders, OEMs and distributors, modularity translates into reduced assembly times, more efficient stock management and greater adaptability to specific applications.

Alongside modularity, Varvel develops customized solutions to meet specific technical requirements. This allows the company to intervene on configurations, couplings, materials, protections and accessories while maintaining full control over design and quality.

The Group’s innovative capability is also expressed through participation in important European research projects. One of these is NewSkin, an initiative funded by the European Union and dedicated to the industrial implementation of surface nanotechnologies. Within this framework, Varvel has long been experimenting with solutions aimed at extending product lifespan and reducing consumption, with direct benefits in terms of efficiency and sustainability.

Quality, supply chain and production control

Varvel’s Made in Italy design approach is closely connected to supply chain control. From raw material sourcing to after-sales service, work organization is structured with the utmost attention to ensuring high quality standards and consistent performance.

An important role is played by MECHNOLOGY, a manufacturing hub created through the synergy between OCI, Benincasa Meccanica and IMAS, local companies controlled by Varvel and specialized in precision mechanics. This structure strengthens the Group’s ability to oversee strategic components and machining operations, providing benefits in terms of reliability and production continuity.

Quality does not concern only the finished product: it involves materials, processes, testing procedures, safety and environmental attention. Over the years, Varvel has obtained certifications that confirm this approach and allow customers to rely on dependable products manufactured by a company committed to sustainability and people’s safety.

In today’s global market, maintaining production control in Italy is undoubtedly a competitive factor. It allows Varvel to preserve a direct connection between design, manufacturing and quality control, reducing the distance between those who develop the solution and those who verify its performance.

The impact of Varvel products on international markets

Varvel’s international dimension is based on a precise balance: products designed and manufactured in Italy, supported by a network operating across major foreign markets. Varvel USA and MGM-Varvel Power Transmission in India allow the Group to oversee strategic areas for assembly, distribution and service, while the global commercial network ensures proximity to customers and partners in more than 60 countries.

This structure makes it possible to apply Italian design expertise to very different production requirements. Varvel gearboxes and gearmotors are used in sectors such as industry, food & beverage, packaging, automatic access systems, automotive, environmental technologies, wind and photovoltaic energy, material handling and textile manufacturing. In each field, application requirements vary, but reliability, ease of integration and operational continuity remain essential.

A concrete example is the collaboration with DORMAS, a South African specialist in fruit and vegetable handling systems. Together with partner BMG, Varvel supplies RT worm gearboxes and RO bevel helical gearboxes installed on conveyors and packaging lines. These solutions are used in several stages of the process, including product receiving, washing, drying, electronic quality sorting, packaging automation, transport of empty and filled boxes and palletizing.

This project demonstrates how know-how developed in Italy can respond to local production requirements while supporting complete lines and specific industrial applications. The versatility of Varvel solutions allows power transmission systems to adapt to different machines, environments and operating cycles.

Made in Italy: a synonym for industrial excellence

In Varvel’s case, Made in Italy translates into controlled design, manufacturing quality and the ability to innovate starting from experience. It is a business model that combines Italian industrial roots with openness to international markets, while keeping real application performance at the center.

For companies, OEMs and machine builders, choosing Varvel means relying on a partner with a solid supply chain, an active R&D department and a global network capable of supporting applications across different sectors.

In an increasingly competitive industrial scenario, Varvel’s Made in Italy design approach continues to confirm its value: power transmission solutions developed in Italy, integrated into international markets and focused on improving plant performance.
